Mark Wallinger Wins Turner Prize

Some might argue that Wallinger's work in 1995 should equally have won the Turner Prize, but there is no doubt that his 'State Britain' work was a firm favourite and a deserved winner this year. The work was a recreation of Brian Haw's peace campaign, from the banners and plackards to the tarpaulin and tea making area. Everything has been painstakingly reconstructed and Wallinger has added to the politics of the piece by including the demarkation point a kilometer from the Houses of parliament, within which free protest is not permitted since the introduction of the 'Serious Organised Crime and Plolice Act' of 2006.

Year 12 Art trip to The Turner Prize 'A Retrospective' and 'The painting of Modern Life' at the Hayward Gallery

Two exciting exhibitions are planned for year twelve on 13th December. The Turner Prize 'A Retrospective' looks back at all the great names who have won the controversial prize since its conception in 1984. Gilbert and George, Anish Kapoor and Damien Hirst have some of their most memorable pieces in the exhibition, but the more traditional painters will not be disappointed with work by Malcolm Morley, Howard Hodgkin and Chris Ofili also on display. 'The Painting of Modern Life' exhibition at the Hayward will complement the very conceptual work at the Tate as it focuses on paintings and prints made through the use of photography. Photo-realism sits alongside deliberately distorted images, but all pieces deliberately exploit the medium of photography, often emphasising the media's influence in the genre by emphasising the shadows created by flash and the angles explored by paparazzi.

Year 12 Oil Painting

Most of year 12 are now working on a portrait oil painting. There is an excellent website with a step by step approach to a figurative portrait. It's well worth a look to see the approach of another artist. The work is by Marvin Mattleson an award winning American artist. Reseach his work and add it to the current reseach you are doing on portraiture.

Life Drawing Classes

Thursday 23rd saw the arrival of Simon Smith and Marion Casey came to deliver a day's life drawing to year 13 Art students and a small number of year12s. It was an incredibly intense day of focused drawing and feedback from the students was great (apart from some whining about sitting on the floor... The youth of today, don't know they're born!) Some very strong drawing was done and a lot was learnt by all involved. Thanks go to Simon and Marion and to all the hard-working participants who made it such a successful day.

Paris Art trip now full

All places on the Art trip to Paris have now been taken, however if you are still interested, fill in your PC07 and hand it into the front office. This will put you on a waiting list and from experience I know we usually have between 1 and 3 cancellations each year, so you still have a chance...
One of the highlights (excuse the pun) of the trip will be the Eiffel Tower, but if you haven't been to the Musee D'Orsay yet you have a real treat in store. Visit the website to get an idea of the variety of works you can see there. Just about every Impressionist masterpiece you can think of is there.
Which venues are you looking forward to most? Let us know...

New Wolsey Theatre Project

Debbie Cowley and a designer will be coming into school to work with the pupils over two lessons to decorate, adorn and embellish old unwanted shoes to create what we hope will be a magificent disply. Keep your eyes peeled for images of the outcomes...
