Double Win for Northgate students in Photography

Outlook Expeditions opened a Participant Photo Competition 2010 for all those who recorded images whilst on their travels with them. Northgate High School have excelled again with two of our students winning prizes for their talent!

Gemma Theobald
from year 13 won the public vote prize of £100 for this stunning photograph. These hippos were magically caught on camera whilst she was in South Africa.

Tara Benjemin from year 12 won the joint independent vote of £50. This was for her beautiful zebras which almost give an optical illusion, again captured in South Africa.

Take a look at their photographs and the competition they faced on the Outlook Expeditions facebook page here.

We are proud to announce that Samantha Coulstock has won the ‘outstanding achievement’ award at the prestigious Wingfield Art Awards. This unique exhibition celebrates the very best of A-Level art across Suffolk and is growing in recognition nationally. Once again, all sixth forms in the county were invited to participate and to submit a maximum of three pieces of work. Northgate High School was delighted to enter work from both Art and Photography students; Samantha was joined by former art student Alexandra Talbott and photography student Barnaby Kent whose work was also highly commended.

Commendation for Year 12 Art Students

Congratulations must go to last year’s Year 12 art students Jack Brett, Joe Davey, Bernadine Pardue and Iona Richards who were all awarded commendations at this year’s Anna Airy Award organized by the Ipswich Art Society. Their art work had been short-listed from over 200 local students aged 16-20. The work beautifully adorned the superb exhibition space at the UCS Waterfront Building overlooking Neptune Quay. Mr Darren Beattie, Head of Art & Photography commented on the outstanding level of work on show. Northgate entries looked stunning within the space and were admired by fellow students, family and artists of all ages. The open exhibition was well-attended and the work was on show to the public for a further two weeks.

Lee Miller at Farley Farm Exhibition

© Lee Miller Archives, England 2010. All rights reserved.

An exciting joint venture between Northgate High School and University Campus Suffolk, we are pleased to be hosting an exhibition of prints by renowned British female photographer Lee Miller. The exhibition is already on display in the foyer of the UCS Waterfront Building where it will remain until 25th March. We hope that during this time many people will be able to take advantage of it.
We are also very excited to be able to offer a small number of seats at a free lecture and slide presentation being given by Lee Miller's grand-daughter, Ami Bouhassane. It is sure to produce a really interesting insight into the life and work of the photographer.

The event will take place in the Main Lecture Theatre in the Waterfront Building, UCS from 4:30pm to 5:30pm on Tuesday 16th March; the lecture will be immediately followed by a private view of the work on display until 7pm.

As places at the talk are limited they will be offered on a first come, first served basis, with RSVP’s by Friday 12th March, please. If you are not fortunate enough to secure a place at the lecture you are still most welcome to the private view of works. Please let Mrs Shouksmith know numbers intending to come to the private view.

We hope to see you there.

Young Artist of the Year prize for Francesca Markot

Congratulations are in line for art student Francesca Markot, who came an outstanding second in a national competition to find 'Young Artist of the Year' for the Clothes Show Live 2009.

Francesca submitted a poster design, celebrating the significance and history of The Clothes Show with the hope of promoting the event amongst schools in 2010. She was one of ten finalists shortlisted out of 1500 entries, invited to attend the award ceremony at the NEC in Birmingham. All winning entrants were directed to walk along the catwalk, parading their design printed on A1 sheets in front of a panel consisting mainly of professional advertisers, who judged work on its marketing potential.

The Art Department and School would like to commend Frankie on her notable achievement.

Art galleries on school website

Three new Art galleries have now been created on the school website, celebrating the work of Northgate art students across the age range. Split into three key stages, they showcase a range of 2D and 3D outcomes, including painting, printing, sculpture, textiles and lens-based responses. Follow these links to view: Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and A Level.

These will be updated reguarly so keep a watchful eye out for your work.

Art residency inspires others

It was great to hear that Jevan's work has inspired an art project at another school, Gisleham Middle, following the presentation at the Head of Art Teachers' Conference in December.
Paul Cope, art teacher at GMS has written about the project he initiated with his pupils. You can read the blog, and view the work at http://paulcope.wordpress.com/.
